Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne illness in North America and Europe, is a multisystem disorder that can result in arthritis, nuerological abnormalities, carditis, and cutaneous lesions such as erythema migrans and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans. The etiologic spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi causes persistent infection despite the development of strong immune responses against the pathogen. We are elucidating strategies B. burgdorferi uses to evade the immune system and identifying bacterial factors that are responsible for the induction of inflammatory pathology in murine models.
