Research Interests:
Dr. Peterson's primary research interest is studying the role of the host response in viral pathogenesis. Current research in the laboratory is focused on the contribution of the innate immune response to retrovirus-induced neurological disease, with a concentration on the involvement of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines and toll-like receptors. Experimental procedures in the laboratory include real-time PCR, RNAse Protection Assay and in situ hybridization analysis of gene expression, the use of retroviral vectors and neural stem cells for in vivo gene expression, and the use of knockout mice to study the contribution of specific genes during retroviral neuropathogenesis.
